Proud to be part of

English

At Lincoln Carlton Academy, we believe that high quality English curriculum should enable all learners to read fluently, write for purpose, have sound grammatical knowledge and application and generate discussion that develops oracy skills and a love of English.

We have a coherent and well organised English curriculum that closely follows the aims of the National Curriculum for English to enable all children to:

  • Read fluently and with good understanding based on excellent phonics teaching in the early years.

  • Develop the habit of reading widely, often, for both pleasure.

  • Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing.

  • Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage through carefully selected texts.

  • Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

  • Are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, taking part in drama and participating in debate.

Phonics

We follow the the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme, starting in the first two weeks of the EYFS Reception year. Phonics is taught for 30 minutes every day and the sessions are always whole-class. Any child who is assessed and found not to be at the expected standard is immediately added to the Little Wandle Keep Up and Catch-Up Programmes.

Children are given a phonic-based reading book to take home after they have read it with their teacher during the week. It is very closely matched to their phonic ability. These books are kept by the child at home for one week so that they are able to read it fluently.
